I use Nintendo Gameboys to create music that can be described as a mixture of dancey, grungy, dirty, melodic, and eerie sounds that I can’t quite place into a specific genre.
The thing that I love most about it, is that I am able to take an old outdated piece of technology from 1989 and re-purpose it, instead of forgetting about it.
The process of creating music on a Gameboy is also extremely challenging, and limited, but in a good way that keeps you determined. In most chiptune music you only have 4 channels to work with as opposed to more modern music composing software, which can virtually have an unlimited amount of channels.
The limitations of a Gameboy keep me motivated to make something full sounding, filling every empty space with cool sounds that it can make. If it doesn’t sound like a Gameboy in the end, then i’m even more stoked.
